An Introduction to the Salimpour Vocabulary. This workshop will give you a taste of the innovative Salimpour Vocabulary. You'll learn the names of steps and families as well as an overview of how the vocabulary is structured . You'll also get a glimpse of the wider Salimpour School training program and why it has become one of the most influential and widely-acclaimed approaches to belly dance in the world.

Suhaila's new choreography will combine the Salimpour Vocabulary with Suhaila's format for a full bodied expression to Melhem Zein's song Dalaouna. This new choreography debuted for the first time as a duet - Suhaila with her daughter Isabella as the finale in Bal Anat in New Mexico 2023. Join us in this celebration of movement!

More about Salimpour Vocabulary: beginning in the 1940s, Jamila Salimpour began naming and categorizing belly dance steps as performed by famous and unknown Oriental dancers from the Middle East. Starting in the late 1960s, her daughter Suhaila Salimpour began adding steps and "Families" that she saw dancers perform throughout the Arab world. The result is a comprehensive collection of belly dance movements that are at once classic and timeless (for instance well known steps as arabic, maya, choo-choo, etc.). Finger cymbals are an integral part of the Jamila Salimpour Format not just as accompaniment but as a fully-realized musical instrument. Jamila Salimpour might be known as the "Mother of Tribal Style," but this vocabulary spans all stylizations and generations.
More about Suhaila format: Suhaila's format revolutionized belly dance with her emphasis on alignment and muscular awareness. She offers the first-ever certification program in belly dance and develops highly-trained dancers with deep Middle Eastern cultural sensitivity. Dancers of all levels and backgrounds are welcome to learn the format and join the School's worldwide community.
